For goosebumps
A singer for emotional moments:
Helmut Lotti. On Thursday he entertained to the best his audience
with the “Time To Swing” program in the well attended
“Siegerlandhalle”– and for three hours. (photo: ciu)
Siegen Helmut Lotti had “Time To Swing” and also
time for all emotional songs. On Thursday there was a lot of
applaus for the Belgian singer in the “Siegerlandhalle”.
Suddenly there is something in the hall, that’s more
than music. An atmosphere that gets under the skin, an emotion
which is strong and “catching”, a moment that unifies the people
in the hall. Perhaps it’s due to the story this song
brings about and which tells about Elvis Presley, Martin Luther
King, about legends and courage, about black and white and about a
more evenhanded world; It tells also about Barack Obana, he’s also
a symbol of what is possible of the impossible. He also has it’s
story with “If I Can Dream”. An hommage of the “King” to the
murdered King, a music, Obama played at his first official act as
US-president, a song, charged with emotions that
converts.
Yes, also the
character of the Helmut Lotti concert. The Belgian singer totally
immersed himself in Presley’s “If I Can Dream”. With a big voice
and just the right dose of pathos. They gave a huge applause on
Thursday evening in the very well attendet “Siegerlandhalle” for
it.
Of course Helmut Lotti
is able to do the swing – and the first part followed consistently
the motto “Time To Swing” – but one can feel that his passion is
directed to the “songs for goosebumps”, like the singer tells.
Lotti seems to know that his audience just wants to hear this:
these tender Love Songs from Elvis (later in the evening an
encore-medley will be crowned by “Love Me Tender”) or these
romantic songs which bring about a touch of foreign countries:
With “Besame Mucho”, Mexico is greeting, with “Granada”, olé, it’s
a Spanish atmosphere, and “Out Of Africa” imparts a foreshadow of
the black continent’s pulsative rhythm. There is hilarious
cheerfulness when Lotti moves closer together with his fans with
“Pata Pata” ( and with this he reminds of Miriam Makeba). You want
to dance? Sure! And then he just bumps into the ladies sitting on
the brink of the theater style.
Helmut Lotti has a
best coordinated orchestra at his back (and also the glittering
stage stairway), at his side he has the musical director Wim
Bohets, who has written all arrangements for the show. One time
the air is full of strings (for example with “Heavenly Match On
Earth”), the other time there is pure Bigband sound (“That’s
Life”), or the trumpet has it’s bright performance – like in
“L.O.V.E.”, the beautiful duet with the soprano singer of the
little choir. All this is harmonious and sounds really good. And
occasionally Helmut Lotti “flashes on”, how diversified his
repertoire, how immens his voice-ability is. Even if the vocal
chords are still affected a bit (Lotti had to pause some days and
to postpone some concerts), he is singing himself in the “dizzying
heights” of the grand opera (“Funiculi, Funicula”) and the
classical “Fever”.
In between he chats
about this or that, acts the clown and the “Nicholas”, tap-dances
up and down the stage, lies down on the floor, gives every lady,
who presents him a rose or some candy, a kiss and shows everybody
in the hall his nice, open smile. Helmut Lotti has got his
audience and it loves him. When he is singing and swinging…..
